Tactical Medical Kits
With ever-changing medical technology and equipment advancements, medical kit options have and will continue to evolve. These kits are imperative to have when faced with traumatic situations and come packed with the needed supplies and medical rescue essentials. There are different types of kits ranging from standard first aid all the way to advanced life support and the type used will heavily depend on the level of trauma and the environment.
Some specialized med kits will contain equipment such as CPR masks, penlights, blood pressure cuffs, variations of standard medical equipment, and even obstetrical equipment. The most common general items that are incorporated into standard med kits include:
- Gauze pads & dressings
- Adhesive bandages & triangular bandages
- Wound cleaning agents
- Adhesive tape
- Blood stoppers
- Burn Relief (such as creams & pads)
- Medical gloves
- Scissors/trauma shears
- Tweezers
- At least one blanket
- Resuscitation equipment (such as resuscitation bag, airway, or pocket mask)
- Elastic wraps
- Splint(s)
Galls carries a massive selection of kits from the industry’s leading brands including Adventure Medical Kits, Chinook Medical Gear, Dyna Med, North American Rescue, EMI, Elite First Aid, and more.
Types of Medical Kits
BLS Kits - BLS, which stands for Basic Life Support, is a non-invasive kit that’s used before any type of advanced life support treatment can be done. It’s the first step taken to stabilize a patient on the scene or in transit to the hospital and will include airway equipment, dressings, burn dressings, etc. This type of kit is mostly used by lay responders, law enforcement, fire personnel, and BLS units.
ALS Kits - ALS, which stands for Advanced Life Support, is a kit that can only be used by medical professionals with the proper training and certifications. This is because the supplies in an ALS kit are specialized for more advanced procedures such as IV insertion, effective airway control, poison control, and more. This kit is most often utilized by ALS units for patients who are in critical condition and require special medical attention.
Blood Pressure Kits - A blood pressure kit is used to keep tabs on the force of blood exerted against the walls of the arteries (aka blood pressure). It measures both systolic (high) and diastolic (low) pressure. BP kits will include a blood pressure cuff, a manometer for reading pressure, an inflation bulb to pump the cuff, and an air release valve to deflate the cuff. Some will come with a stethoscope attached as well. Please note the size of the cuff used. There are different sizes to fit an infant, child, or adult’s arm.
CPR Kits - A CPR kit is a form of PPE that’s designed to protect rescuers from cross-contamination when in close contact with a patient. It will include a CPR mask/barrier with a one-way valve so that the rescuer can give breaths to the patient and prevent any bodily fluids from reaching them. Many CPR kits also come with medical gloves and antimicrobial wipes for additional cleanup of bodily fluids.
First Aid Kits - A first aid kit can come in the form of a bag, pack, or box and is used to treat minor injuries or temporarily keep a severe injury under control until the first respondents arrive. This type of kit can have first aid supplies that range from convenience items such as bandages, burn cream, and common OTC medications all the way to equipment for more severe injuries such as splints, chest seals, and tourniquets.
First Responder Kits - This type of kit is used for first aid emergencies or trauma situations by first responders and typically comes in the form of a backpack or bag. It has many slots and organizational pockets so that respondents have instant access to their emergency supplies without having to dig around for them. These emergency medical kits can be found with common first aid supplies and EMT gear such as hemostats, trauma shears, BP cuffs, face masks, rescue blankets, and more.
IFAK Pouches - IFAK, which stands for Individual First Aid Kit, allows an individual to perform Self-Aid/Buddy-Aid. Its main goal is to treat severe hemorrhaging and airway blockages, but it can also be used for basic first aid as well. By design, an IFAK kit comes as a small pouch with a MOLLE system so that it can be taken anywhere and attached to a variety of modular compatible tactical gear. IFAK contents will include a CAT tourniquet, a nasopharyngeal tube, chest seals, pressure dressings, and medical gloves.
Oxygen Kits - This type of kit is essential for delivering life-saving oxygen therapy to patients who are not breathing properly on their own or are not receiving enough oxygen to the body (aka hypoxia). Without the proper amount of oxygen, a patient could go into shock or suffer damage to their vital organs. This kit helps prevent this and allows EMS to quickly administer oxygen therapy. These emergency kits often come with an oxygen cylinder with a pressure gauge, a regulator, a bag valve mask, a CPR mask, an airway kit, a non-rebreather mask, and a nasal cannula.
Tactical Trauma Kits - A trauma kit is an advanced first aid kit that’s designed to treat major injuries and keep a patient alive until medical help arrives. The main focus is to stop severe bleeding and will typically include a tourniquet, hemostatic gauze, pressure dressings, chest seals, wound packing gauze, trauma shears, and more.
